Welcome to Aldeby Wines
Launched in 2008, before selling our first bottle of wine in April 2009, we are still a relatively new company importing and selling wines direct from the producers in the South of France, and now for first time we are beginning to list some other exciting wines from Spain
Our wines are all made by small producers who passionately care about what they are making - quality is everything. The range includes some of the best wines made in Languedoc, as well as one or two gems from the Catalan region of Spain. But it also includes many wines at more modest prices, including quite a few gems at under ten pounds a bottle. The thing that links all the wines is that they offer good quality drinking, and we believe outstanding value for money. It is not just us who believe we are going in the right direction, in her Financial Times column on 2nd November 2012, Jancis Robinson included us in a list of UK merchants who have "... a decent selection of Languedoc wines."
Ian Hard at Work! The wines produced in the South of France offer a lot to the consumer: they have a great tradition and history of making wine; but they are also capture the spirit of innovation so widespread in Languedoc. Today the wines of the region are very diverse, from character full dry whites to quaffable fruit-packed rosé, and from some superb sweet wines to complex, intriguing and world beating reds.
The new wines from Spain that fought their way onto the list in September 2012 are relatively few in number, but they too offer real interest, from gems from the powerhouse region of Catalonia, notably from DOC Priorat and DO Monsant, to a classic DO Rueda, all the wines offer great tipicite - really showing what their areas can offer. They also introduce new grape varieties to the list including Tempranillo and Verdejo, offering new flavours and different experiences to the drinker. The whole range is still focused on wines for an occasion, whether it is a wet Tuesday evening in mid-winter when you just want to eat a simple meal and watch the TV, or a big set piece dinner party where you want to eat and drink at a high level. To help all our wines have food matching recommendations.
People often want to know why they should shop with Aldeby Wines, and how can they be certain the wines are any good. Well you might not like the wines, after all we all have different tastes, but we are sure that all of the wines are well made and that they are well described by Ian, who is one of only two people in the UK with a Wine and French Degree as well as the WSET Diploma. His knowledge of the wines of Languedoc is wide ranging, as he has been visiting the area and drinking the wines for over twenty-five years, which coupled with his year in the Pic Saint Loup give him experience very few can match.
Please have a browse through the site, there is sure to be something that will catch your eye - all we ask is that you order a minimum of six bottles (though if you really only want one or two, get in touch and we will probably be able to help) If you are not sure, or the choice is just too difficult, then try one of our mixed cases, which have been specially designed to introduce the drinker to specific aspects of this fantastic wine regions.
The Advice page is also worth a look, to discover things like what is actually meant by a unit of alcohol, thoughts on serving temperature, etc.
If you are looking for wines from a different part of the world, or if nothing here takes your fancy, then please have a look at my fellow members of the Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants (ASDW), at www.asdw.org.uk They are all true enthusiasts about wine.
