Chateau Saint Martin de la Garrigue
Over the last 20 or so years Chateau Saint Martin de la Garrigue has been transformed with an increasing focus on making the best wines possible from the domain's terroir. The domain has two main types of soils: red sandy gravels; and brown limestone. The 6oha of vineyards are all planted on east to south facing slopes, which benefit from sea breezes, and are surrounded by wild garrigues.

The domain produces wine in several appellations:
  • AOC Picpoul de Pinet and AOC Coteaux du Languedoc/AOC Languedoc for the white wines
  • AOC Coteaux du Languedoc/ AOC Languedoc for the rose
  • AOC Coteaux du Languedoc/ AOC Languedoc and AOC Coteaux du Languedoc/ AOC Languedoc Gres de Montpellier for the reds
They also make one or two very interesting Vin de Pays wines.

The viticulture is just what you would expect from a good domain of the region, with low yields achieved through old vines and hard pruning. The vinification can be characterised as modern, i.e. using steel and temperature control, and low intervention.

All of wines made on the domain are very well balanced and all have lovely character, really expressing the grape varieites used to make them and the terroir they grow in.

Picpoul de Pinet 2009

Chateau Saint Martin de la Garrigue
Picpoul de Pinet 2009

A classic Picpoul de Pinet in many respects - plenty of grassy citrus, green apples and a touch of honeyed fruit on the nose and in the mouth - but it also offers so much more, with a lovely freshness, complexity, a nice minerality on the length, and great balance. Still a classic seafood wine, this Picpoul is also great as an aperitif or with food.

For those that already know the Picpoul de Pinet wines this is a treat, for those that don't, just try
