Domaine de la Croix Chaptal
This is another vineyard with a very long history, the land which we now know as Domaine de la Croix Chaptal was growing vines more than 2000 years ago, when the Romans realised that this was great land for viticulture. After a period during the Dark Ages when the vines were ripped out, the vineyards were replanted by the Benedictine monks from St-Guihelm-le-Desert some time shortly after 804 AD. Its history then becomes blurred until 1826 when Augy le Vitry, a famous land owner, lawyer and wine maker registered ownership of the land. Since the current owners obtained the domain from his descendants they have carefully restored the old cellar where the wines are still made.
The domain is one of the fastest improving producers on the Terrasses du Larzac, making a full range of wines. Currently three are listed, with one white - the fascinating, complex and wonderful dry Clairette - and two red wines - the tasty and interesting Grenache and Carignan dominated "Les Terrasses", and the lovely Carignan, Syrah and Grenache based Cuvee Charles.
